I just held down the option key. This brought up a screen with bootable volumes on it. Click the one you want, 9 or X, and away you go.
Since upgrading to Panther recently though, 9 is a thing of the distant past!

This will only work if you have separate partions. If you have OS 9 and OS X on the same partition, only the currently blessed OS will show up at the GUI OF boot selector.

Switch

This should work on single or multiple partitions (hold option at startup).
As referenced elsewhere in these comments it will not work on pre 'New-World' systems. Which start with G4 in the desktop and slot load iMacs (I think).
Easiest way with 'Old-World' systems is to set the startup to 9 and hold down the X key on boot to switch.
Some 'Old-World' (and some new) systems will boot to X with the option key.

No, it is true. Unless you have an OS on different partitions, you will not see it as an option in that startup disk screen. Doesn't matter which machine it is.
The thing you're thinking of is that holding option on boot does absolutely nothing on older machines.

Of course that only works if you have 9 and X on separate volumes/partitions. Most people have them both on a single volume/partition...

The Option key boot isn't implemented on B&W G3s. Its ROM doesn't check the option key. Rather than start in single user mode, I find it just as fast to switch systems by inserting a really stripped down version of 9.2.2 on a CD, holding down the C key to boot to it, and then changing the startup system there and rebooting.

I just started using panther. I am in Mac 9 want to go back to X. Can you tell me what page the information is on in Jaguar Edition of Mac OS X Hints.
Thank You

Option key - why jump through hoops to change the boot volume? Single-user mode is risky...

FWII:
I have Wallstreets running Panther via XPF with 9 and X on seperate partitions. Up until about OS X 3.4 or 5 I had to either 1)hard reset (SHIFT+FN+CONTROL+POWER) which resstarts in 9, then reboot from XPF into Panther, or 2)boot to open firmware and choose 'BYE' or 'BOOT' to choose to start up in 9 or X. or 3) After hard reset open startup disk in 9, wait for it to freeze, restart with CONTROL+COMMAND+POWER and then open it again and choose Panther from startup disk; restart.
With 3.4 or 5 I was suddenly able to cold reboot and hold OPTION down; this would start up in OS 9. (Normal start is in OS X) a normal restart from 9 then restarts in Panther. I do not have a start up option screen.

Thanks for the reminder about the Option key. I also use a version of the script Change Startup Disk, which you run before restarting to set the Startup Disk to OS 9. (I also use a companion OS 9 version to switch to OS X from 9). Sometimes I like to change my Extensions, Control Panels, etc, and you do this by holding the spacebar at Startup in OS 9 (bringing up Extensions Manager), but I don't believe you can hold Option AND spacebar.

Can anyone help me with this, I am reletively new to Macs.
I just installed OS X 10.2 on a Power Mac G4 that also has OS 9.0.
-OS X installed fine, was able to boot to it a couple of times
- I switched to boot to OS 9, that worked fine but I have not been able to get back to OS X.
- On my iMac G3 with OS X 10.2.8 and 9.2.2 when in OS 9 I can go to Startup disk and chose the OS to boot from - on the above mentioned installation in OS 9 when I go to Startup disk it shows me the disk icon, but no OSs.
- if I hold the X key while booting... it boots into OS 9.
- is this because of the older OS 9 version? The firmware ? (I don't know which version it is and can't find it in OS 9) Would resetting the PRAM help?
Thanks in advance.

Switch Users Mac Os X Keyboard Shortcut

Yes, it is because of the older OS 9 version, no resetting the PRAM will not help. Upgrade the system to at least 9.1 and then make sure you have the newest version of the Startup Disk Control Panel.
Under the Apple Menu is About this Computer, this will show you what version you have. Use the Software Update control panel to upgrade.
